Head coach Carmen DeFrancesco. Listed with Mifflinburg as District 4 Class 3A champion; lost the District 2-4 Class 3A championship

PA Football News lists Shamokin 10-2 in 2002 with Carmen DeFrancesco as head coach. No league record is on that line. District IV's champions page lists Mifflinburg and Shamokin together in Class 3A for the 2002-03 school year. PA Football News's District 4 champion list names Mifflinburg. Sports Illustrated's Nov. 9, 2025 story on Mifflinburg says the Wildcats shared that 2002 title with Shamokin because there were no district playoffs.

The Times Leader's Nov. 16, 2002 story, by John Erzar, is the District 2-4 Class 3A championship the night before in Coal Township: Pittston Area 7, Shamokin 6. The paper says Shamokin finished 10-2 and had been ranked sixth in the state in Class 3A. Pittston, 9-3, advanced toward Strath Haven.

Tony Avvisato returned the opening kickoff to the Shamokin 32, and Matt Pisano scored from 28 yards. Charles Consagra kicked the extra point. Richie Schiccatano returned the second-half kickoff 67 yards. Backup quarterback Dustin Martin found Chad Stumhofer for a 5-yard touchdown with 9:31 left in the third, after starter Jared Petrovich left with a lower-back injury. The extra point, off a low snap, hit the Pittston line. DeFrancesco told the paper that a made kick would have sent the game to overtime. Pisano finished with 159 yards on 27 carries. He fumbled at the Shamokin 20 with 1:14 left, and Pittston's Dave Wesley and Mike Wesley sacked Shamokin on the last possession.

Mount Carmel's archive lists the Sept. 20 meeting as Mount Carmel 40, Shamokin 0, with Mount Carmel at home.
