Head coach
Ed Binkoski
1965–1969. Record 36-16-1.
Ed Binkoski is the head coach on the sourced Shamokin seasons for 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. Those season lines add to 36-16-1. The Daily Item, writing in 2018 about a preseason visit, said he led Shamokin Area in its first season to a 10-1 record in 1965. PA Football News also lists 10-1 for 1965.
The District 4 Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, class of 2024, says he graduated from Coal Township High School in 1950, where he played football and basketball, and received an honorable mention on the Pennsylvania State All Star Football Squads as a senior. He earned an academic scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, played under George Munger as a blocking back on the single wing, shared the punting duties, and graduated in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree and as an Army lieutenant from Penn's ROTC program. He then served two years.
The same page says he taught American history and assisted in football at Sunbury for two years starting in 1956, then spent three years at Coal Township as head basketball coach and assistant football coach before becoming head football coach in 1961. It says the Purple Demons were Eastern Conference Southern Division champions in 1961 and 1964, that he was Coal Township's head coach from 1961 to 1964, and that he continued as head coach for six years at Shamokin Area after the jointure and retired from coaching after 1970 to become assistant high school principal. PA Football News lists Joe Thiroway, not Binkoski, for 1970.
The Hall of Fame page says he announced Shamokin Area games on WISL from 1971 to 1974, interviewed James Michener while Michener was researching Sports in America, and officiated through the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1990, after 20 years away, he spent three years as an assistant on Bob Chesney's staff at Lourdes Regional. The page says he was inducted into the Bernie Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1981, received the Eastern Conference Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and in 2018 was inducted into a United States Marine Hall of Fame for his part in the Shamokin-Mount Carmel series.
