Shamokin Football 1993 Season

PA Football News lists Shamokin 10-2 in 1993 with Sam Schicchitano as head coach. No league record is on that line.

The Times Leader's Nov. 4, 1993 story, by Paul Sokoloski, has Shamokin at 8-1 and Berwick at 9-0. Berwick led the Eastern I Region Class AAA ratings with 67 points. Teams had until midnight Sunday, Nov. 14, to choose the Eastern Conference playoffs or the District 2 playoffs. Both started Nov. 20, with championships Nov. 27. Robert Gimble, the conference secretary and treasurer, said Berwick could shut Shamokin out of the state path by choosing District 2. The paper said this was the last season the Eastern Conference could be the route to states.

That story says that two years earlier an 11-0 Shamokin team went through District 4 and reached the Class AAA state playoffs, while a 10-1 Berwick team played the Eastern Conference championship. PA Football News lists 1991 as 12-1. The 11-0 figure is the paper's. No Shamokin player is named in the Nov. 4 story.

The Times Leader's Nov. 27, 1993 preview of that day's Eastern Conference Class AAA title game lists Shamokin 11-1 at Berwick 12-0, 1:30 p.m. at Crispin Field, on WYOU. It calls him a first-year coach. PA Football News lists Sam Schicchitano for 1992 and lists the finished 1993 season as 10-2. The paper's 11-1 is the record going into the game. The preview names tailback Scotty Kurtz at 1,200 rushing yards, sophomore Jamie Wasloski at more than 700 rushing yards, flanker Chad Richie at more than 700 rushing yards, and lineman Chris Waugh at 6-foot-4 and 340 pounds. It says Shamokin beat Salesianum, called the second-ranked team in Delaware, in the regular-season finale, and beat Scranton Prep 32-24 in overtime in an Eastern Conference opener the Friday before. The preview does not have the title-game result.

EasternPAFootball's Division III championship list has Shamokin 32, Scranton Prep 24 in overtime, and Berwick 21, Shamokin 7. PennLive's Eastern Conference champions list names Berwick as the 1993 Class AAA champion. Mount Carmel's archive lists the Sept. 24 meeting as Shamokin 42, Mount Carmel 8, with Mount Carmel away.
