The Times Leader's Sept. 28, 1996 story, by Bill Green, is an Anthracite League game the day before at Shamokin: Shamokin 20, Marian Catholic 15. It was Marian's first loss, dropping the Colts to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the league. Marian coach Stan Dick is quoted in the story.
Todd Hockenbroch threw a 42-yard pass to Josh McBride on a 94-yard drive and scored from 4 yards with 5:02 left in the half. Phil Sarrow recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Marian 29, and Hockenbroch scored from 13 yards. Rich Waugh kicked both extra points, and Shamokin led 14-0 at halftime. In the third, Chris Perhonitch scored for Marian from the 3, and a two-point pass made it 14-8. Hockenbroch then hit Paul Yost for the touchdown that made it 20-8 with four seconds left in the third. The extra-point run failed. Rick Balliet's 1-yard run and Kevin Rutch's kick made it 20-15 with 7:26 left. Shamokin recovered a fumble to end Marian's last drive.
