EasternPAFootball's Aug. 31, 2008 story, by Shawn Weller, is the opener at Southern Columbia in Catawissa. MaxPreps lists that game as Friday, Aug. 29. Southern Columbia 35, Shamokin 22, and Shamokin was 0-1. The story does not name the Shamokin coach. It says Southern's previous home loss was the 2005 opener, in overtime, to Shamokin.

Steve Roth broke free from the 42, and Bryan Snyder's extra point made it 7-0 with 8:10 left in the first quarter. Roth later scored from 6 yards. Nick Domanski scored around the left side, and the score was 14-8. Sam Springer scored on a 78-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Shamokin then scored on passes of 34 and 47 yards, and Roth added a 34-yard touchdown. The final was 35-22.

Shamokin opened with minus-5 yards on three plays. Domanski recovered Jeremy Campbell's fumble at the 19. Edward Tayler hit Leo Mirolli for 33 yards to the Southern 34, and Curtis Nichols intercepted at the 13. Kory Kramer recovered a Roth fumble at the 22. A 19-yard pass to Jared Montgomery set up first-and-goal at the 3 before that touchdown. Tyler Scicchitano intercepted Campbell to open the second half. Shamokin was 11 of 23 for 228 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception, and the story says the ground game struggled to net more than 20 yards. Southern rushed for 401 yards, turned the ball over four times, and gave up four sacks. The passing line was 29 yards on 4 of 7, with an interception.
